Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (PSP)
Summary
Developer:
Vicarious Visions
Publisher:
Activision
How many Marvel characters can you name off the top of your head? Marvel list 1,368 on their website. So why do we see the same handful over and over again? Spider-Man, The X-Men and the Fantastic Four seem to be the only characters that developers are interested in. Wolverine is cool and all, but how many games can you play with him as the star before claws and hightened senses become boring? Along comes Activision with Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and suddenly we have over 20 playable characters and a cast of more than 140, goodies and baddies including characters seldom seen in games such as Thor, Ghost Rider and Electra.
Ultimate Alliance is an action RPG and plays much the same as the X-Men: Legends games. However, there are a few differences in the way the game plays. For example, characters are advanced by a series of skins, essentially different costumes that imapart different abilities to the characters. For example, Spidey's black symbiote uniform increases his strength and speed. The notable attention to detail here is that all of the skins represent stages of the characters' progressions throughout the comic books they have appeared in. Other than progression, you have a great deal of control over the characters in your super team, including naming the team itself and building the roster of heroes to draw on. There are stats bonuses for using teams that exist in the Marvel Universe, but you can also establish new teams that you have always wanted to see fighting together. Only four characters can be active at a time, but your roster can include more.
With 17 locations, a plot by C.B. Cebulski, numerous sub-quests and the fate of the entire Marvel Universe in your hands, Ultimate Alliance will keep Marvel-loving RPG fans playing late into the night.

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition (PSP)
Summary
Developer:
Rockstar
Publisher:
Rockstar Games
Rockstar don't only make Grand Theft Auto Games, you know. The first Midnight Club street racing game put you in the shoes of a bored cabbie who gets drawn into the exciting world of a club that races highly-tuned cars across moonlit cityscapes. The rules were quite simple: win and you win your opponent's car. Of course at the beginning of the game, your taxi-cab wasn't going to win against anything in a straight race, so it was important to use cunning if you wanted to get ahead. Petrolheads on both sides of the Atlantic were kept happy, with parts of Manhattan and London featuring in-game. The second game in the series saw players cruising round any one of three cities, flashing their lights at other drivers to challenge them to races.
The third instalment has already come to PS2 and Xbox in the form of Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition, so called because it is produced in association with DUB magazine. Now it makes Rockstar's debut on PSP too. Once again you can race through three American cities, and the game features licensed cars in a number of different categories: from bling heavy SUVs like Escalades, to tuned sedans, to motorbikes including Harley choppers, and the obligatory Japanese RICE cars, featuring motors created by the legendary Nissan Motor Company amongst other, less celebrated stables.
In their partnership with celebrated hip-hop cultural leaders DUB, developers Rockstar San Diego have kept pace with recent developments in the growing genre of car-tuning, street-racing games. Tuning and customisation plays a bigger part than ever before, and the online feature which made the second game successful is back, offering support for up to eight players over your PSP's WiFi connections. Naturally, this being a Rockstar title, the soundtrack will have been given careful consideration, and with DUB's influence, you can be sure there'll be some pretty heavy beats booming out of your ride as you pick your route through tuning hotspots Atlanta, San Diego and Detroit. It may well be that you are waiting for Rockstar's GTA to be-bloody the screen of your new PSP, but if you're a fan of the controversial development house's work, then this will have to do for now.

LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (PSP)
Summary
Developer:
Traveller's Tales
Publisher:
Activision
LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy is the follow-up to the hugely successful LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game, but where the original game enabled you to play through levels based on the new trilogy of films (Episodes I-III) the sequel enables you to play through Episodes IV-VI. As you progress through the story of the three films, you get access to over 50 characters including your favourites Luke, Han, Leia, Chewbacca and the droids. Each character has a few characteristics that make them useful in different situations: the droids can open doors, Artoo can fly short distances, Ben and Luke can use the Force and Lightsabers, etc. Your task is to use these abilities to best effect in order to progress to the end of the levels of which there are six per film.
Some levels involve flying the many spacecraft of the Star Wars universe, including X-Wing fighters, Snowspeeders and even the mighty Millennium Falcon - a childhood dream for many. However, the majority of levels are on foot, with your characters indulging in platforming action interspersed with fire fights, as you battle against the forces of the evil Empire.
As in the original game, there are side quests involving collecting LEGO studs and pieces of kit. The studs can be used to buy items and characters in the Mos Eisley cantina that serves as the game's central location. Kit pieces are combined into vehicles that can be viewed outside the cantina. Once you have finished a level in the story mode, you can return in free play to gather up the remaining studs and kit pieces. You can return with characters you have bought or unlocked in order to use their abilities to access hard-to-reach areas of the level. You can even design your own characters by swapping heads, bodies and legs to create the ultimate LEGO Star Wars creature.
LEGO, Star Wars and video games - can there be a better combination?

Tekken: Dark Resurrection (PSP)
Summary
Developer:
Namco
Publisher:
Sony
The Tekken franchise makes its welcome debut on the PSP in Dark Resurrection, giving you the ability to kick some bottom wherever and whenever you want.
Graphically, Tekken Dark Resurrection is a whizz and pushes the PSP to its very limits. With more than 30 customisable characters including new fighters Lili and Dragunov, and fighting across 19 stages, there should be plenty of variation for even the most experienced Tekken fan. All the characters from the arcade version of the game are present, as is Armor King, who makes his long-awaited return to the franchise. In addition to the normal arcade option, there are also several different types of game modes for players to get their teeth into: Time Attack, Gold Rush, Dojo and the option for multiplayer chaos in Ad Hoc Wireless Mode.
As stated previously, old favourites like Arcade Battle are included, as is Story Battle -choose a character and ultimately fight to uncover their past history. Other modes in the game include Tekken Dojo, where gamers must fight their way to the top in a selection of different Dojos until they win the title Tekken Lord. Another feature of Dark Resurrection is the ability to try to beat your previous high score with a choice of three different attack modes: Time Attack - your opponent is not just a fighter but also the clock; Survival - defeat as many foes as possible in one life; and Gold Rush - earn fight money for damage dealt within the time limit. Another mode included is Quick Battle, where you can choose from 1-on-1 battles or team battles against the CPU. Alternatively, it is possible to form a team of up to eight players in team battle mode for an exciting knockout tournament. Also, hone your skills in the all new practice mode which includes tutorials, freestyle training and command training that covers both self-defence and attack.
Continuing on the theme of character customisation first seen in Tekken 5, gamers can create a profile and spend their prize money won from fighting on many different accessories and movie sequences. Dark Resurrection offers gamers twice as many items to purchase than in Tekken 5. Another new element is the ability to check an opposing character's profile before you actually fight them, by reviewing their battle history and high scores.
If you are a Beat 'Em Up fan and PSP-owner, then this game is a must-buy.
