Heading out to the battlefield, it seems like common sense that there are certain people you'd want at your side, and others you wouldn't. You'd think folk with the title 'Bad Company' would fall into the latter. Electronic Arts and DICE don't care. They're chucking you in with some Baaaaadddd Company.

In Bad Company, the latest in EA's Battlefield series, players take up the gun of Preston Marlowe, a rookie in the 222nd Army battalion. As you might have guessed from the title, he knocks around with a crew of misfits, and these misfits aren't quite so interested in fighting the enemies of democracy as they are in finding a tasty payday. More specifically: gold. So, off you trot behind enemy lines in search of the shiny stuff.

What sets Bad Company apart from the rest of the crop of military shooters is the sheer destructability of everything. Walls and doors are no longer the barriers that they once were, and that's going to change the way that you play. Hiding behind a wall and taking pot shots at a tank isn't going to get you too far, because a couple of shots and it'll be gone. In fact, a whopping 90% of the game world is destructible.

The game comes with a robust multi-player offering, with 24 players able to pile in and make the mortar fly. It wouldn't really provide much company at all without multi-player, after all.

Let's face it, if you're going to fall in with a bad crowd, it might as well be a bad crowd with top-end military hardware.

Two things stand out about Far Cry 2. The first is the sheer size of the game. Players are presented with an open world that's a massive 50 square kilometres in total, all resplendent with detail. Second is just how much effort has gone into the design. Things work as they're meant to work. Take fire, for instance. If you're approaching a settlement you need to attack and the wind's at your back, setting the dry grass alight will serve you well, because the flames will blow towards your opponent and get your attack nicely underway. Try it with the wind blowing the other way, however, and you'll find yourself getting singed at least.

Fracture is developed by Day 1 Studios, whose previous project was Vivendi's F.E.A.R. The game's story involves your typical sci-fi 'the-world's-on-the-brink-of-ecological-disaster' fare, with cybernetically enhanced soldiers duking it out with a genetically modified opposition.

If you're thinking something to the tune of uh, another sci-fi shooter, then you should hold it right there, bub. What promises to make Fracture different, if not great, is the terrain deformation gameplay mechanics. Normally 'terrain deformation' is code for 'we've got a racing game that doesn't do anything our last-gen racer did, except look prettier'. Not here, however.

Your character is a demolitions expert, and he works with weapons specifically designed to use the terrain against his opponents. Pop a grenade up in the air and instead of getting a bang you'll get a huge sinkhole that drags all your enemies into the bowels of the earth.

Fracture also boasts a multi-player aspect that, with the aforementioned terrain deformation, should provide an experience like no other online game you've played.
